Professor Martin Leach PhD, FMedSci, FInstP, FIPEM, FRSB trained as a physicist, and is Emeritus Professor of Physics as applied to Medicine at the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), a College of The University of London, and at The Royal Marsden Hospital (RMH), the national specialist cancer hospital where he has been responsible for the MRI physics support to the Hospital.
Before retiring he was Co-Director of the Cancer Research UK Cancer Imaging Centre and National Institute for Health Research Infrastructure Facility at the ICR and RMH. He built and led a multidisciplinary research group developing better ways of imaging and understanding cancer and its treatment, particularly using MRI, with annual funding ~£4M from charitable (particularly Cancer Research UK) and government sources. He has also been jointly responsible for MRI provision within the hospital, and in a range of complex building and equipment projects. Martin led a national study of MRI for screening women at high risk of breast cancer, which led to new guidelines in the UK, USA and elsewhere. He has also contributed to developing a range of new imaging approaches and to trials of new cancer treatments. Martin has held Honorary and Visiting Professorial posts at University College London and Kings College London.
Martin became a trustee of Emerson in 2000, having previously participated in several courses and helped raise funding for the glass greenhouse. He has served as a trustee on a range of trusts, charities and also as a school governor. He lives in Ashurst Wood.
