Red flags and what to do about them: Patients have the right to expect that they will be offered the best available treatment for their medical problems, and this implies that all practitioners should be able to recognise clinical presentations that may require urgent specialist assessment and intervention. Such presentations are often referred to as Red Flags. The trouble is that – in certain contexts – ANY clinical presentation may represent something that needs immediate expert attention.
To help you develop a safe approach to patient management, this workshop considers some clinical presentations that might signal the existence of serious underlying dysfunction. Its objective is to ensure that you understand the possible implications of various red flag combinations of symptoms and signs and are able to act appropriately and promptly in the best interest of your patients.
